DEARBORN, Mich. (Oct. 17, 2022) – The Molina Cares Accord (“MolinaCares”), in collaboration with Molina Healthcare of Michigan (“Molina”), presented $100,000 to the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services (ACCESS) in support of a pilot program addressing social determinants of health (SDOH) for Arab Americans and community residents. The goal of the program is to improve health equity by increasing access to care.
“MolinaCares is committed to building stronger communities through improving people’s health and lives,” said Carolyn Ingram, executive director of The Molina Healthcare Charitable Foundation. “We are excited to support this important partnership and look forward to the positive health outcomes as a result of this program.”
This initiative provides specialized screenings and assessments that evaluate critical social barriers to an individual’s well-being, including housing, employment, discrimination, and other factors that can impact health management. A case manager, funded by the MolinaCares grant, will then focus on the top three priorities identified for improving health outcomes for each participant.
There are approximately 3.7 million Arab Americans living in the U.S. A recent study of SDOH for Arabs in southeast Michigan showed the primary barriers to well-being include transportation to health care providers, food insecurity, and general financial strain. To best guide services moving forward, a portion of the grant funding will go toward documenting and analyzing the health outcomes of program participants.
“Social and economic factors have a significant impact on attaining and maintaining good health, particularly in the Arab American community,” said Mona Makki, director of the ACCESS Community Health and Research Center. “We are grateful to MolinaCares for their contribution to support our Transition to Success Program, an interconnected network of clinical and social services that seeks to improve health outcomes, making the health care system work better for everyone.”
