The MolinaCares Accord Donates $50,000 to Doula Training Program for Underserved Populations in the Houston Area
HOUSTON – August 4, 2023 – The MolinaCares Accord, in collaboration with Molina Healthcare of Texas, recently presented $50,000 to the March of Dimes to make doula services more accessible to underserved mothers throughout Houston and surrounding areas.
The U.S. has the highest maternal mortality rate of any other developed nation, according to the March of Dimes. New research indicates that the south, most notably Texas, has seen rates double since 1999, particularly in women of color.
“Through this important partnership with March of Dimes, we hope to make a significant impact in combatting the issues facing vulnerable moms-to-be,” said Chris Coffey, plan president of Molina Healthcare of Texas. “This doula training program will help make specialized care available to women who might not otherwise have access to such services.”
Doula services typically include physical, emotional, and educational support during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period.
“We know that doula-supported women have been shown to have lower rates of preterm birth, decreased C-section rates, and better outcomes overall,” said Jen Torres, senior executive director of market impact at March of Dimes. “We are grateful for MolinaCares and their partnership.”
