CHARLESTON, Miss., Oct. 21, 2024 – The MolinaCares Accord (“MolinaCares”) and Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi (CFNM) recently gathered to present $60,000 to the James C. Kennedy Wellness Center in support of the Food as Medicine program designed to assist food insecure individuals in Tallahatchie County.
The funds are part of a larger $250,000 grant that MolinaCares donated to CFNM in 2023 in support of efforts to overcome food insecurity in the Mississippi Delta. The Food as Medicine program gives participants access to fresh food on a monthly basis, as well as food demonstrations and other components designed to empower individuals to live their healthiest life.
“The program aims to improve food disparity and increase healthy lifestyles in the region,” said Dr. Catherine Moring, PhD, RDN, LD, BC-ADM, CDCES, MCHES, executive director of the James C. Kennedy Wellness Center. “We are grateful for the partnership of the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi and MolinaCares.”
Tallahatchie County ranks 64 out of 82 in health rankings in Mississippi, according to a 2022 state report. The Wellness Center hopes to impact the local community through this vital program and the funds donated to help maintain it for years to come.
“The Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi is proud to join MolinaCares in supporting the work the Wellness Center is doing to assist those in need across the Delta and create better outcomes for local families,” said Stacye Trout, director of development at Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi.
“MolinaCares is committed to breaking down barriers to critical resources like nutritious meals,” said Bridget Galatas, plan president of Molina Healthcare of Mississippi. “Through this partnership with the Community Foundation and James Kennedy Wellness Center, we can make a real impact in the overall health of communities across the region.”
