LOUISVILLE, Ky., Sept. 23, 2024 – Today, the Molina Healthcare Charitable Foundation (“MolinaCares”), in collaboration with Passport by Molina Healthcare (“Passport”), presented a $10,000 check to the Coalition for the Homeless in support of its Rx: Housing fund. First launched in 2011, this effort provides the prescription – or “Rx” – to those facing chronic homelessness by placing them into permanent housing.

Rx: Housing is built from a research-based housing first model. The approach takes individuals off the streets and puts them into housing with support, rather than expecting them to first address a substance use disorder or serious health issues while surviving in an encampment. Working with Coalition case managers, Rx: Housing covers the cost of barriers like rental deposits, fees and furniture. The MolinaCares funding alone will help approximately three dozen Louisvillians find a permanent living situation.

“We’re proud to support this proven model that takes our citizens at greatest risk for a health crisis off the streets and into supportive housing,” Ryan Sadler, plan president for Passport by Molina Healthcare. “With the Coalition for the Homeless addressing housing security, individuals can then focus on health and addiction struggles in order to improve their overall well-being.”

The Coalition’s most recent analysis of homelessness in Louisville showed between 2018 and 2021, there was a 41% increase in the number of people experiencing homelessness (7,572 to 10,640) and a 4,837% increase in the number of people seeking services other than shelter (75 to 3,724). Studies have shown the Housing First model offers greater long-term housing stability and can reduce healthcare costs.

“We are so grateful to Passport by Molina Healthcare for helping us to reach our goal of making sure every Louisvillian can access a safe and supportive place to sleep, eat, play, work and grow,” said Natalie Harris, executive director of the Coalition for the homeless.
