LAS VEGAS, March 14, 2024– In honor of International Women’s Day, Molina Healthcare of Nevada (“Molina”) recently donated over 11,000 feminine hygiene products to Project Marilyn, a Las Vegas-based non-profit whose mission is to ensure everyone has a healthy and dignified period. Molina team members then assembled 800 hygiene kits that Project Marilyn will distribute through community partnerships to women in need.
“The rising costs of feminine hygiene supplies has led many women in need to resort to using improper materials which can result in everything from mild infections to disrupting fertility,” said Kristen Wall, VP of healthcare services for Molina Healthcare of Nevada. “We are proud to partner with Project Marilyn to overcome this basic health care gap so that lack of access to feminine hygiene products does not become a barrier to daily activities such as school or work.”In recent years, inflation has significantly impacted the affordability of feminine hygiene products. Average prices for these products rose between 8 and 10% in 2022, according to NielsenIQ. Furthermore, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported personal-care goods had their biggest annual price increase since 2012. In instances where menstrual pads are financially out of reach, individuals resort to using alternative, unhygienic materials to absorb or contain menstrual flow, which can increase the risk of both urinary and reproductive infections. Research shows inadequate access to menstrual hygiene supplies can also contribute to mental health challenges by associating the menstrual cycle with stressful emotions and feelings of shame.
