DETROIT, June 12, 2023Molina Healthcare of Michigan (“Molina”) recently presented Black Family Development, Inc. (BFDI) with a donation in support of its Family Preservation and Support Services program. The initiative provides therapeutic and life skills training, home-based services and crisis intervention to underserved families in Wayne County.

Since 1978, BFDI has connected families in need with resources including food, rent and utility assistance, physical and mental health services, academic support for children and other quality of life services. According to US Census data, 43% of children in the Detroit area live in poverty and 31% of Black residents live in poverty.

“Molina Healthcare of Michigan is proud to partner with impactful community organizations that share the goal of addressing barriers to quality and equitable health care for underserved populations,” said Terrisca Des Jardins, plan president, Molina Healthcare of Michigan. “BFDI will use the funds to boost programs and services that help support and strengthen local families.”

BFDI’s mission is to strengthen and enhance the lives of children, youth and families through partnerships that support safe, nurturing, vibrant homes, schools and communities. Of the families receiving family preservation services from BFDI in 2021, more than 80% demonstrated an increase in self-sufficiency in just one year.

“Black Family Development, Inc. sees our partnership with Molina Healthcare of Michigan as mission-aligned. Both organizations prioritize the health of the greater Detroit community,” Kenyatta Stephens, CEO of Black Family Development, Inc.

About Black Family Development, Inc.

Black Family Development, Inc. (BFDI) is a private, non-profit comprehensive family counseling agency that was created in 1978 by the Detroit Chapter of the National Association of Black Social Workers (NABSW). By establishing BFDI as a family counseling agency, NABSW sought to promote and provide quality social work services in Detroit that were culturally relevant and culturally sensitive. The original community project, which gave birth to BFDI, was based on the agreed upon needs of the community and resulted in programmatic focus by BFDI on child abuse and neglect. Since that time, BFDI has grown to accommodate the increasing demand for a variety of specialized, family focused counseling and advocacy services in the community.
