MUSKEGON, Mich. (Nov. 18, 2023) – The MolinaCares Accord (“MolinaCares”), in collaboration with Molina Healthcare of Michigan (“Molina”), partnered with Catholic Charities West Michigan, Trinity Health and Hackley Community Care to host the Molina HOPE Community Event, offering clothing, immunizations and more.

The Molina HOPE event is a helping hand to a community that sees 14% of Muskegon County residents report food insecurity, 12% experience severe housing concerns, and only half of Muskegon residents get their annual flu shot. This year 1,000 winter coats were donated to Muskegon area residents in need, bringing the total coats donated statewide over the past 7 years to 27,000.

“What started out as a coat drive has now become so much more,” said Terrisca Des Jardins, plan president for Molina Healthcare of Michigan. “Whether it’s a warm coat, a vaccination, or assisting with redetermination paperwork, we are proud to serve the Muskegon community and help residents access the resources they need.”

In addition to the support from event partners Trinity Health and Hackley Community Care, a key focus of the event was to assist area residents with their Medicaid redetermination paperwork. The national public health emergency temporarily paused the annual redetermination of Medicaid eligibility. Now, states have restarted the process, and more than 270,600 Michiganders have lost their coverage this year. Some lost their coverage even though they’re eligible because they didn’t submit the proper information to the state. Molina staff members were onsite to ensure eligible beneficiaries maintained their coverage.

“We appreciate Molina’s continued dedication to Muskegon. Their focus on the whole person -providing families not only with coats, but also flu shots, and connections to other health-related services – demonstrates they are truly committed to building better communities one life at a time,” said Karol Maurer, director of development and community outreach of Catholic Charities West Michigan. “We’re so pleased to partner with them to meet these basic needs at a time when so many of our local families are in need of help.”
