MIAMI, Jan. 15, 2025 Molina Healthcare of Florida (“Molina”) will provide a $20,000 grant to Healthy Start Coalition of Miami-Dade to provide car seats and portable cribs to families in need. The local nonprofit will not only offer the items for free to qualified families but also provide information about proper installation and use. The grant will help purchase approximately 300 seats and cribs.

Many families in Miami-Dade County need car seats, portable cribs and, most importantly, safety education that is vital for the proper use of these items. NHTSA estimates that correctly used child restraints reduce fatalities by 71% for infants younger than 1 year old and by 54% for children 1 to 4 years old in passenger cars. Molina’s donation, combined with proper education, can save the lives.

“We are honored to join forces with Molina Healthcare of Florida to strengthen the support for pregnant women, infants, fathers, and families throughout Miami-Dade County,” said Jeannette “Jinny” Torres, CEO of Healthy Start Coalition of Miami-Dade. “This partnership represents an exciting step forward in promoting safety and ensuring our community has access to the care and resources needed to thrive.”

The Healthy Start Coalition of Miami-Dade has been designated by the state of Florida to serve as Miami-Dade County’s prenatal and infant care coalition. The coalition serves as part of a statewide network of community-based organizations focused on reducing Florida’s infant mortality rate and improving the lives of pregnant women, fathers, infants and their families. The Coalition is responsible for the establishment and oversight of the Miami-Dade Healthy Start system, which directs local, state and federal funding, providing oversight to local community organizations that deliver direct services for those impacted by the birth of a newborn.

“Molina fosters healthy childhoods by providing children and their parents access to the highest quality care, but there are also basic needs that are critical to their well-being,” said Bill Hindsale, plan president for Molina Healthcare of Florida. “With families on the move now more than ever, it’s important that those from all socioeconomic backgrounds have access to portable safety items, which is why Molina is funding this initiative.”

The grant is part of a broader investment campaign supporting area nonprofits committed to improving birth outcomes, child safety, educational attainment, housing stability, work readiness, financial sustainability, mental health supports and healthy aging.
