San Diego County Board of Supervisors Chairman Nathan Fletcher Provides Welcome Remarks with Focus on County initiatives
LONG BEACH, Calif., October 14, 2021 – The MolinaCares Accord (“MolinaCares”), in collaboration with Molina Healthcare of California (“Molina”), hosted a virtual panel titled Addressing Social Determinants of Health and Access to Care Against the Backdrop of a Pandemic. San Diego Board of Supervisors Chairman Nathan Fletcher offered welcome remarks before a panel of experts moderated by Feeding America’s Chief Government Relations Officer Vince Hall, who discussed the inequities exacerbated by the pandemic.
The San Diego-based panel examined COVID-19 through a local lens in terms of its long-term impact on physical and environmental factors impacting access to coverage and care. They focused on the critical need for cross-sector collaboration to ensure communities have access to high-quality care and services to improve health outcomes.
Chairman Fletcher opened the panel by highlighting his efforts in San Diego to improve health outcomes, stating, “When I became chair of the Board of Supervisors in January, we outlined our framework for the future, a framework that is driven by issues around health equity and better outcomes. We have made significant investments in behavioral health and mental health services. Importantly, we are changing the mindset and the direction our Board gives to our County enterprise to produce better outcomes for all of our constituents.”
Dr. Sayeed Khan, chief medical officer for Molina Healthcare of California, followed Chairman Fletcher’s remarks. “Molina recognizes and approaches delivery of care with the understanding that social determinants of health, including housing, economic stability, education, food security, and physical environment, are important factors in improving health outcomes.”
He continued, “We work with community partners like the ones participating today to connect our members to the resources and services they need to support their health and well-being.”
The panel of experts included Dr. Wilma Wooten, San Diego County public health officer, Rudolph A. Johnson, III, president and CEO of the Neighborhood House Association, and Dinora Reyna Gutierrez, executive director of the San Diego Organizing Project. The full panel discussion can be viewed HERE.
