LAS VEGAS, May 21, 2024 – Molina Healthcare of Nevada (“Molina”) recently donated $50,000 to the Nevada Physician Wellness Coalition (“NPWC”) to expand the organization’s efforts to address physician burnout, suicide, and wellness by offering services and resources for physicians, medical students, and their families.
NPWC is an independent, non-profit organization developed by physicians, and is the only organization of its kind in Nevada. The grant, part of Molina’s $2.8 million investment to enhance access to care, behavioral health services, and provider workforce support throughout the state, aims to further progress the work NPWC is doing across Nevada.
According to the Nevada Physician Wellness Coalition, the number one cause of death in the U.S. among medical trainees is suicide. Every time a physician dies by suicide, approximately 2,000 patients are impacted. Although Nevada is 32nd in population size among the states, Nevada ranks 48th for the number of board-certified physicians per 100,000 people.
“Supporting the health of our providers is critical to preserving access to health care for our families and communities,” said Dr. Nima Alinejad, chief medical officer of Molina Healthcare of Nevada. “Molina is committed to Nevada and proud to partner with the NPWC in its important work.”
The $50,000 grant was presented to Nevada Physician Wellness Coalition at its first-ever Las Vegas-based leadership roundtable, hosted by Molina. The event convened health care leaders across the Las Vegas Health System. NPWC shared its mission, goals and resources, and leaders discussed health priorities of Las Vegas providers. Molina and NPWC were joined by executives from Centennial Hills Hospital, Spring Valley Hospital, Summerlin Hospital, Valley Hospital Medical Center, Sunrise Hospital and Medicaid Center, MountainView Hospital, Southern Hills Hospital and Medical Center, and University Medical Center of Southern Nevada.
“As providers, we often focus solely on the health of patients and rarely on our fellow colleagues, although the need is great,” said Dr. Neil Gokal, president of the board of directors of the Nevada Physician Wellness Coalition. “We are grateful for Molina’s partnership in caring for our physicians, so we can efficiently and effectively care for our patients and meet the needs of our state’s growing population.”
The Nevada Physician Wellness Coalition’s resources include a hotline staffed by psychologists with expertise in clinical stress. Other resources include self-guided online tools, access to research, podcasts dedicated to combatting stress, and coaching programs.
