Dr. Canady is a recognized national thought leader in health inequities and disparities\, cultural competence\, and social justice. She has published and presented broadly on these topics\, and her passion for this work is evident in her personal\, academic\, and professional life. Before becoming the CEO of MPHI\, she served as the Health Officer and Director of the Ingham County Health Department. Her career path has also included serving as Director of Student Affairs in the College of Nursing at MI State University and Assistant Area Director in the Department of Residence Life at the University of North Carolina. She earned her PhD in Medical Sociology from Michigan State University\, a master’s degree in Public Administration from Western Michigan University\, and a bachelor’s degree in Public Health Nutrition from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

SUMMARY:Virtual Panel: Addressing Gaps in Behavioral Health Care Capacity
DESCRIPTION:Enhancing the behavioral health capacity in New Mexico is more important than ever. Recent data from the Kaiser Family Foundation shows New Mexicans report a higher level of anxiety and/or depressive disorder than the national average. \n\n\n\nWith the known correlation between mental health and substance use disorders\, some New Mexicans likely have behavioral health co-morbidities that require care and attention across the care continuum. However\, there are simply not enough providers to meet the rising demand in behavioral health services. \n\n\n\nCurrently\, New Mexico needs nearly 10\,000 health care workers to bring the state up to national standards. This gap is especially pronounced in the Medicaid population where there are approximately 2\,700 licensed behavioral health providers who serve nearly 670\,000 Medicaid managed care enrollees. Unfortunately\, this has resulted in roughly half of adults with mental illness in New Mexico not receiving treatment. SUMMARY:Virtual Panel: Bridging the gaps in access to care and health equity for all New Mexicans
DESCRIPTION:A multitude of factors contribute to access to care issues New Mexicans face\, including coverage\, provider availability\, cultural and linguistic barriers\, and geography. According to a recent U.S. News report\, New Mexico ranks in the bottom half with higher-than-average uninsured rates (14.6% vs. 12.9%). Another 50% of New Mexicans depend on Medicaid for health coverage. In addition\, 80% of the counties in New Mexico are considered rural or frontier in nature with limited access to health care especially in specialized areas like behavioral and maternal health. New Mexico is also home to a rich diversity of culture. Cultural practices and norms around health are important considerations in the delivery of quality care. DESCRIPTION:The MolinaCares Accord\, in collaboration with Molina Healthcare of New Mexico\, recently hosted a virtual panel: Adolescent Behavioral Health in a Post-Pandemic World. \n\n\n\nWhile the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated behavioral health challenges for all populations\, New Mexico’s adolescents were hit particularly hard. At a formative time of socialization and education\, our youth were removed from school settings forcing them away from their peers and school resources that often provided support for kids. As we move on from the pandemic\, this group continues to struggle with lingering behavioral health issues\, and we are seeing troubling rates of teen suicide and substance abuse as a result. Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell offered welcoming remarks before a panel of experts moderated by Steinberg Institute chief executive officer Karen Larsen. \n\n\n\nThe panel of experts from across California discussed how California organizations are implementing innovative programs to meet people where they are to address needs beyond traditional health care settings. These efforts parallel the state’s work to transform the Medi-Cal system to better address prevention and whole person care. Panelists spoke about models to improve care in underserved communities\, including people experiencing homelessness\, formerly incarcerated people\, members of the LGBTQ+ community\, and those struggling with substance use disorder. \n\n\n\nSupervisor Mitchell opened the panel by highlighting her efforts in Los Angeles County\, stating\, “ensuring access to high-quality health care and needed County services for such a diverse district requires finding innovative solutions that are responsive to constituent needs. The Covid-19 pandemic put a sharp focus on pre-existing health care\, housing and homelessness issues that have grown worse over the last two and a half years. DESCRIPTION:The MolinaCares Accord hosted a discussion about innovative programs and partnerships to improve health care delivery to at-risk Texans. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nThe MolinaCares Accord\, in collaboration with Molina Healthcare of Texas\, hosted a virtual panel on July 20\, focused on innovating health care for the future and tactics to support underserved and elderly Texans. \n\n\n\nDr. Jerry Allison\, medical director for Molina Healthcare of Texas\, hosted the discussion and Olga Rodriguez\, chief of staff and associate vice president of Texas A&M Health and former leader with Texas Health and Human Services Commission kicked off the panel with opening remarks. \n\n\n\n“Managing personal health care can be daunting\, but through technology and collaboration\, every individual in Texas can be equipped with the tools necessary to take control of their well-being\,” said Dr. Allison. “This event was a great example of the health care community coming together to bring forward solutions and best practices to educate and empower people throughout our state.” \n\n\n\nWill Maddox\, managing editor for D CEO Magazine and editor of D CEO Healthcare\, guided the conversation\, which focused on real challenges patients are facing\, as well as solutions that can be implemented to expand access and education across the state. \n\n\n\nJohn Hawkins\, president and CEO of the Texas Hospital Association; Robert Leavitt\, mobile integrated health coordinator for the McKinney Fire Department; Dr. David A. Miramontes\, FACEP FAEMS NREMT-P\, medical director for the San Antonio Fire Department and associate clinical professor at UT Health San Antonio; and Dr. Cynthia Weston\, associate dean for clinical and outreach affairs and associate professor at Texas A&M College of Nursing\, spoke to the issues and innovative solutions successfully deployed to identify at-risk patients\, deliver enhanced care\, reduce potentially preventable emergency room visits and improve overall health outcomes. \n\n\n\n“Working with at-risk populations has been a key element of my career\,” said Rodriguez. “One of the most important things I’ve learned over the years is that you can’t do it alone. You need a multitude of organizations — not just government\, but healthcare partners\, hospitals\, providers\, and health plans. There’s not just one solution for all of Texas\, or even for each community. There are multiple solutions than can be implemented\, and by working collaboratively across the state\, we can better solve challenges associated with healthcare delivery for vulnerable populations.”

DESCRIPTION:The MolinaCares Accord\, in collaboration with UW School of Nursing\, hosted a virtual roundtable on behavioral health workforce capacity on December 13 at 4:00 p.m. PST. \n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nNurses have been on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic and have seen firsthand the resulting capacity crisis affecting the health care system in Washington State. While the impacts of this crisis on physical care can be more easily seen\, the pandemic has exposed and amplified its impact on behavioral health as well.
