SUMMARY:Virtual Panel: Addressing the nursing care shortage in Texas
DESCRIPTION:As the world recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic\, the health care industry is still feeling its immense effects\, particularly as it grapples with a changing — and dwindling — workforce. According to the Texas Workforce Commission\, 23\,000 registered nursing positions remain unfilled\, leaving many patients in need without care options\, and turnover rates remain high as many face burnout or new opportunities. As the state’s population continues to grow\, these challenges will only get worse without collaborative action between health care leaders and state officials to ensure the Texas health care system can meet the needs of the future of Texas. \n\n\n\nHosted by Bob Kalin\, VP of long term care options\, Molina Healthcare of Texas\, the event kicked-off with a joint keynote presentation by Maureen Milligan\, president and CEO\, Teaching Hospitals of Texas and Jackie Brock\, chief nurse executive and executive vice president\, Harris Health System. \n\n\n\nElena Rivera of KERA News\, moderated the panel discussion covering a wide variety of topics: \n\n\n\n\nHealth care worker shortages following the pandemic and Texas’ population influx\n\n\n\nImpacts on patients\, especially those in rural or underserved areas\n\n\n\nInnovations in care options\n\n\n\nPartnerships with state agencies and the health care industry to meet patient needs\n\n\n\nThe future of the health care staffing landscape\n\n\n\n\nPanel speakers included: \n\n\n\n\nRachel Hammon\, executive director\, Texas Association of Home Care & Hospice\n\n\n\nAntonio Johnson\, VP of people engagement\, Cantex Continuing Care Network\n\n\n\nNate Moore\, chief operating officer\, TCARE\n\n\n\nDan Pollock\, CEO\, Advantis Medical

SUMMARY:Virtual Panel: Innovations in Health Care Delivery for At-Risk Populations
DESCRIPTION:The MolinaCares Accord hosted a discussion about innovative programs and partnerships to improve health care delivery to at-risk Texans. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nThe MolinaCares Accord\, in collaboration with Molina Healthcare of Texas\, hosted a virtual panel on July 20\, focused on innovating health care for the future and tactics to support underserved and elderly Texans. \n\n\n\nDr. Jerry Allison\, medical director for Molina Healthcare of Texas\, hosted the discussion and Olga Rodriguez\, chief of staff and associate vice president of Texas A&M Health and former leader with Texas Health and Human Services Commission kicked off the panel with opening remarks. \n\n\n\n“Managing personal health care can be daunting\, but through technology and collaboration\, every individual in Texas can be equipped with the tools necessary to take control of their well-being\,” said Dr. Allison. “This event was a great example of the health care community coming together to bring forward solutions and best practices to educate and empower people throughout our state.” \n\n\n\nWill Maddox\, managing editor for D CEO Magazine and editor of D CEO Healthcare\, guided the conversation\, which focused on real challenges patients are facing\, as well as solutions that can be implemented to expand access and education across the state. \n\n\n\nJohn Hawkins\, president and CEO of the Texas Hospital Association; Robert Leavitt\, mobile integrated health coordinator for the McKinney Fire Department; Dr. David A. Miramontes\, FACEP FAEMS NREMT-P\, medical director for the San Antonio Fire Department and associate clinical professor at UT Health San Antonio; and Dr. Cynthia Weston\, associate dean for clinical and outreach affairs and associate professor at Texas A&M College of Nursing\, spoke to the issues and innovative solutions successfully deployed to identify at-risk patients\, deliver enhanced care\, reduce potentially preventable emergency room visits and improve overall health outcomes. \n\n\n\n“Working with at-risk populations has been a key element of my career\,” said Rodriguez. “One of the most important things I’ve learned over the years is that you can’t do it alone. You need a multitude of organizations — not just government\, but healthcare partners\, hospitals\, providers\, and health plans. There’s not just one solution for all of Texas\, or even for each community. There are multiple solutions than can be implemented\, and by working collaboratively across the state\, we can better solve challenges associated with healthcare delivery for vulnerable populations.”

SUMMARY:Virtual Panel: Improving Access to Health Care for Rural Texans
DESCRIPTION:Texas is the most rapidly growing state in the country\, adding 4 million people\, the most of any state\, over the past decade. However\, Texas ranked 42nd overall in a recent measure of health system performance — in large part because of how hard it is for residents to access and afford the healthcare they need. \n\n\n\nOn March 29 our virtual panel discussed improving access to health care for rural Texans. The event was hosted by Dr. David Valdez\, chief medical officer of Molina Healthcare of Texas\, and expert panelists included Kelly Cheek\, director of the Texas Rural Health Association and director of community and economic development at the West Central Texas Council of Governments\, John Henderson\, president and CEO of the Texas Organization of Rural and Community Hospitals (TORCH)\, Dr. Stacey Silverman\, assistant vice chancellor for academic planning & policy at the Texas A&M University System\, and Russell Thomas\, Jr.\, family physician in Eagle Lake\, Texas. Karen Brooks Harper\, Health and Human Services Reporter at the Texas Tribune\, moderated the panel.

SUMMARY:Mother's Day Spa-Tacular in Texas
DESCRIPTION:Molina honors Texas mothers through food drive and gifts\n\n\n\nAmong the many negative outcomes of the COVID-19 pandemic\, food insecurity has increased in communities across Texas and the United States. \n\n\n\nAccording to 2018 data from Feeding America\, one in seven Texans were food insecure\, with one in five Texans under 18 being food insecure. It is well documented that not having adequate nutritious foods negatively affects the body both physically and mentally – leading to slower development in children and hurting the mental health of adults and children alike. \n\n\n\nMolinaCares of Texas is committed to the health and wellbeing of all Texans\, and we know that having enough nutritious food to eat is the foundation of a healthy life. To help feed our neighbors\, Molina Healthcare of Texas provided monetary donations to nine foodbanks and pantries across the state to fund approximately 4\,800 meals\, 260 family boxes\, and adopt two families to feed for the year. \n\n\n\nIn addition to the donations\, MolinaCares of Texas staff members volunteered at foodbanks and pantries in the days before Mother’s Day to hand out roses and spa hygiene kits to mothers and mother figures picking up food. Texas’ mothers and mother figures have been integral in keeping families healthy during the pandemic\, and we wanted to honor their efforts and help them relax and care for themselves. \n\n\n\nFor more information\, please visit www.MolinaCares.com/Texas
